Battery-Operated Residential Water Metering with AMR (LoRa)

Accurate Consumption Measurement & Automated Meter Reading

Introduction

Residential water consumption monitoring is essential for billing accuracy, conservation, and equitable distribution of resources. Traditional mechanical water meters face wear, clogging, and accuracy degradation over time. The Battery-Operated Ultrasonic Residential Water Meter (RWM) provides contactless measurement using the Transit-Time Differential Principle, enabling precise and reliable flow monitoring in household, commercial, and community water supply networks.

Manual meter readings, especially in large residential layouts and urban clusters, are timeconsuming, labour-intensive, and prone to errors. Physical access to meters can be difficult due to locked premises or scattered locations, resulting in delayed billing, revenue losses, and disputes. With intermittent water supply, leakages, reverse flows, and unmetered usage, utilities require accurate and continuous data without manual dependency.

SBEM addresses these challenges with the Battery-Operated Ultrasonic Residential Water Meter (RWM) integrated with AMR (LoRa). The meter measures flow accurately without any moving parts, while a field operator collects readings wirelessly through SBEM’s Aqualink infrared radio device and the SensLink Mobile App. Data is transmitted via LoRa signal towers to the cloud and viewed on the SenSphere Web App, enabling automated billing, consumption transparency, and real-time monitoring.

General Arrangement

SBEM’s Solution

The solution uses the Battery-Operated Ultrasonic RWM with AMR (LoRa). A field operator travels near these locations. Using SBEM’s Aqualink portable device (IrDA Bluetooth), meter readings are automatically collected without entering the premises. Data is uploaded to SensLink Mobile App, transmitted via wireless towers to the cloud, and monitored at the management system SenSphere Web App.

Working Principle

The Battery-Operated RWM operates on the Transit-Time Differential Measurement Principle using two angled ultrasonic transducers.

Pulses that travel with the flow arrive faster than those travelling against the flow.

The difference in travel times is processed to calculate flow velocity.

Flow rate (Q) is obtained using the known cross-sectional area of the pipe.

Readings are logged internally and collected wirelessly via Aqualink.

Data is transmitted through LoRa communication towers to the cloud, accessible on SenSphere.
