Submarine: Fluid Level Detection Solution

Ultrasonic Technology-Based Solution for Accurate Fluid Level Detection in Submarine Applications

Challenge: Accurate Flow Monitoring in Submarine Systems

The Submarine required a robust, maintenance-f ree, and precise level detection solution to ensure reliable monitoring of f reshwater, seawater, and fuel levels within confined and highpressure compartments such as tanks, bilges, and control spaces.

Conventional mechanical switches and float-based sensors could not sustain performance under extreme conditions, including high humidity, vibration, salinity, and varying temperatures.

The challenge was to design a compact, corrosion-resistant, and marine-grade level switch that ensures fail-safe operation under all sea conditions.

SBEM’s Engineering Solution

SBEM designed and manufactured Ultrasonic Level Switches (ULS), a customized, marinegrade solution tailored to the specifications. The system ensures accurate detection of liquid presence or absence in submarine tanks while operating reliably in f resh water, sea water, and fuel media.

  • Primary Converter (ULS): Ultrasonic sensor and amplifier assembly
  • Secondary Converter (VP-6DR): Power Supply and Relay Processing Unit
  • This two-part configuration ensures isolation between sensing and control circuits, enhancing safety and operational reliability onboard.

Working Principle

The Ultrasonic Level Switch works on the ultrasonic pulse transmission and reception principle using piezo-resistive elements:

  • The transmitter sends high-f requency ultrasonic pulses across a fixed gap.
  • When liquid is present, the ultrasonic waves travel through it efficiently and are received by the receiver.
  • When air or no liquid is present, wave transmission drops sharply, resulting in a low signal.
  • The amplifier converts this difference in amplitude into an electronic output signal.
  • This output energizes or de-energizes relays in the VP-6DR unit, triggering an alarm or control action.
  • The ULS units can be installed in horizontal, vertical, or diagonal orientations, and the VP6DR unit enables operators to monitor and test switch health remotely f rom the submarine’s control system.
