Industry

Irrigation Project

Background

In large-scale irrigation projects, accurate water distribution is essential to ensure fair allocation to every village and agricultural zone. In this project, water is supplied from the River Canal to the Right Bank Canal (RBC), which covers multiple villages.

The irrigation department must maintain proper records of how much water is supplied to each village through RBC and compare this with the Left Bank Canal (LBC) distribution.

However, these pipelines are spread across remote areas, mostly made of HDPE pipelines, where welding or major modifications are not possible. The department required a dependable flow measurement system that could work across long distances, provide reliable readings, and transmit data automatically to central monitoring.

Requirement

The customer needed a solution that could:

  • Measure total water consumption through RBC lines for each village
  • Record and compare readings with LBC for government documentation
  • Operate reliably across remote locations spread over 75+ km
  • Work with HDPE pipelines, where welding and tapping are not feasible
  • Provide automatic GSM/GPRS data transmission to a central location
  • Function continuously without manual readings

This required a non-intrusive and power-independent measurement system.

Product Installed

SBEM provided the 153 UTW Ultrasonic Flow Meter, customized to suit the irrigation project’s unique challenges.

Key elements of the solution:

  • Saddle-based mounting arrangement specially designed for HDPE pipelines where welding is not possible
  • Clamp-on ultrasonic sensing to avoid pipe cutting or line shutdown
  • Solar-powered system for uninterrupted operation in remote regions
  • GSM/GPRS connectivity for automatic data transfer
  • Reliable coverage over 75+ km, enabling centralized monitoring

SBEM ensured that each installation was calibrated and aligned to provide consistent readings across the entire irrigation network.

Technology Used

153 UTW Key Technologies

  • Ultrasonic Transit-Time Measurement: accurate & non-intrusive
  • Solar-powered operation: ideal for remote irrigation areas
  • GSM/GPRS communication: centralised online monitoring
  • Custom saddle design: perfect for HDPE pipelines
  • Robust, weatherproof housing for harsh outdoor conditions

Customer Benefits

  • No pipe cutting or welding required, preventing leakage risks
  • Suitable for HDPE pipelines, where traditional flow meters cannot be installed
  • Zero plant shutdown during installation
  • Fully solar-powered, no need for external power
  • Automatic GSM/GPRS data from all remote locations at one point
  • Accurate RBC water consumption helps maintain transparent government records
  • Enables fair distribution of water to villages with traceable accountability

Outcome

The irrigation authority now receives accurate flow consumption data from multiple RBC locations spread over more than 75 km. This ensures:

  • Proper water accounting
  • Fair distribution to villages
  • Transparent comparison with LBC data
  • Zero water wastage from unnecessary pipe cutting
